Encouraged by her mother Joan started stitching by hand at a young age, she was introduced to Free Machine embroidery at a Scottish Embroidery Tutors' summer school.

On retrial she completed Parts I & II City Guilds certificate at Edinburgh's Telford College. And joined Group Twelve in 2002.

Joan was commissioned to make a large wall hanging for the Chapel of Glasgow University and it was dedicated in 2003.

She has also sold pieces in Group Twelve exhibitions and with the Embroiderers’ Guild travelling exhibition in 2004.

Living and working in Linlithgow her work is influenced by the countryside and nearby Forth estuary.

Her preferred style is painted backgrounds embellished with hand and machine stitching following her own photographs and drawings.
